CHINNOR VILLAGE HALL
Almost 6 months into the year and it has already been a busy time for Chinnor Village Hall (CVH). During the February half term, we had the foyer, and stairwell decorated. This gets a lot of traffic, and an entrance is the first impression visitors get when entering the building.
In March, Chinnor Rotary held a cinema afternoon for children, accompanied by their adults and make full use of our new digital projector and screen.
In April we proudly unveiled a blue plaque in honour of Gertrude Leverkus, who designed the original hall. Much of which still stands today. The plaque was sponsored by CVH and Chinnor Heritage.
8th May VE day – CVH held a free street party for all. Over 80 children and 70 adults came along during the period 3pm – 5.30 and enjoyed games, crafts, food, poppies to take home as well as balloons and small prizes.
The Board of Trustees really pulled out all the stops and worked hard as a team to make sure everyone had a good time. Lots of spare time was given in making cakes, as well as scones, which were demolished, setting up bunting, talking to lots of children and adults. We also had a marvellous memorabilia table, items were loaned to us by a Chinnor family, and we were extremely grateful as the table drew a lot of attention.
The children had great fun making their own jam sandwiches. Adults relaxed with teas, coffee and of course a slice of cake. We should like to thank so many of you who donated towards the event. £116.50 in total and very much appreciated. These monies will go towards enabling CVH to hold fundraising events later this year. More news on those events to come.
Into May, and having listened long and hard to our hirers in regard to rising temperatures in the main hall, we bit the bullet and CVH now has air conditioning in the main hall. It’s not a cheap exercise but to keep our village hall up to modern day standards and make it a very enjoyable experience when using the halls, the Board of Trustees felt it was a justified expense.
Without such a proactive approach regarding CVH by the Board of Trustees the halls would lag behind.
As the current Chairman I feel that each and every member of the Board is acknowledged and has my heartfelt thanks and support for all your endeavours. So: -
Alanah, who keeps our expenditure in hand,
Sue our H&S administrator who ensures that all our H&S requirements are fully UpToDate. Sue also has a small sub team of Margaret and Fiona to help her in what these days is not only are large part of everyday life but essential when running a public venue
Fiona keeping up our first aid boxes well equipped
Wendy and Colin, our cleaning and maintenance team, between them our halls and grounds are well maintained and spotless.
Margaret who is always on hand to give help wherever it is needed alongside Chris.
Last but no least Hayley who led our VE Day tea party and left no stone unturned in getting us all prepared and organised.
Thank you all for being such a marvellous team and a pleasure to work with.
Zena Baker – current Chairman Chinnor Village Hall
CHINNOR WINE CIRCLE
Being as we missed the last deadline we thought you would like to know what has been going on at Wine Circle and also what things we have in store.
The April meeting was our AGM, when all the members of the committee were re elected, after the meeting we had a very interesting talk bt The Revd Dr Jacky Barr, Rector of the Parish, it was extremely interesting to find out how a doctor became the Rector of the Parish! The May meeting was an illustrated talk by Keith Spencer from the chair museum in High Wycombe, who spoke about the chairmaking in The Chilterns, Chinnor was very much involved in this many years ago, the wood ( Beech) would be brought down from the woods and then distributed to the people who would be doing the “bodging”.
Our next meeting is Thursday 5th June, when we will have an illustrated talk on “The Forests od Borneo” covering the flora, fauna and animals of the forest, our speaker is John Tyler. You can find us in The Reading Room, High Street, the meeting commences at 8pm, the cost for the evening is £3pp, just bring along a glass, and something to drink, there will be a tasting of a Chilean wine at the end of the evening.
We will look forward to seeing you.
DONKEY LANE COMMUNITY ORCHARD - MONITORING THE BIRDS 2025
Since moving to Keens Lane in 1988 I have been watching the birds in and around the Orchard for my own interest. We have regarded ourselves as very privileged to have such a wealth of wildlife on our doorstep.
Last year, 2024, prompted by a course on garden birds I began to monitor the birds in the Orchard in May. I realised that this was too late and the dawn chorus was more likely March to May as the birds mostly sing to attract a mate or to mark their territory. By May only the least successful or those going for a second brood were still singing. All but the desperate had fallen silent!
A small group from the Orchard met in early March 2025 and ‘hatched’ a plan to begin monitoring the birds in a more measured way. As most of the birds are very quick, very small and partly brown we thought that monitoring the birdsong would be a good start. That would give us a good idea of what was there that we could not identify by observation plus the larger and more visible red kites, magpies, jackdaws, blackbirds, pheasants, red legged partridge and pigeons!
After some research on bird apps and recommendations from the experts on my course we settled on the Merlin app. The most up to date version is more accurate than other apps, one of which recorded a barn owl every time someone crossed the railway. Merlin is by no means perfect; it did record a moorhen in the orchard, seemingly too far away from water although it could have been flying over. The appliance of common sense is required.
We decided to record as often as we could in approximately 10-minute bursts. A feature of the app is that it records the birds’ songs or calls so that we would be able to compare our sounds with examples of bird songs and calls that have been verified. The app gives a photograph of each bird, which is helpful if you can hear it but not see it, also a general description of its features and habits which are all clues to its identity.
Sitting quietly in the Orchard we spotted nesting sites. This year, starlings nested in a hole in the king tree, hatched and fledged young. The parent birds were going in with insects in their beaks and coming out with white faecal sacs in their mouths. We recorded them at the beginning of March, fell silent through April, recorded again in May. No need to advertise in April because they were busy raising a family.
The green woodpecker has moved over to a nearby wood and is still in good voice, recorded on the app recently. Hopefully it will return to nest. We think there are greater spotted woodpeckers nesting in the wildlife area near where magpies chose the tops of the trees last year.
Blue tits, greenfinch, goldfinch, wrens, dunnocks and robins are evident in the hedges. We regularly have skylarks on our recordings overhead, although they nest in the open grassland. Kites regularly roost in the ash and nearby silver birch tree, but are nesting elsewhere. A buzzard was recorded and seen circling overhead, also a sparrowhawk circling ominously low over the trees.
It is too early to be able to make too much analysis but so far, we have identified 51 different birds.

MILL LANE COMMUNITY GARDEN
It's been an exciting time in the Community Garden. Our new ventures are progressing well. The greenhouse is full of seedlings and baby plants. The new pond has settled down and looks like it has always been there. It's ready and waiting for the frogs to move in. This year we have set aside one of the raised beds for growing flowers for cutting and we are hoping to be able to put flowers out as well as vegetables, for passersby to take home. The new 'pick your own' tubs at the entrance have been planted with rhubarb, herbs, radishes and spinach. Along with the original tubs by the gates, these are available to be picked at any time.
Little Greens Garden Club is in full swing and proving popular with our growing group of budding gardeners. They've been preparing the ground, sowing and planting and learning how to use a range of tools. Also hunting bugs and creepy crawlies and finding out how to stop them eating our plants. One session included tasting herbs and we are all looking forward to sampling the vegetables and fruits as they ripen.
Once again, we have a full programme of events and visits from local groups planned. The Plant and Seed Swap was well attended and there are still some plants available for a donation. On a lovely sunny afternoon, we welcomed visitors from Hempton Field. They enjoyed a tour of the garden, tried out some planting and filled a small bag with our own dried lavender to take home. The Beavers have made their first visit of the year, finding out about trees, learning to use tools and planting sunflower seeds and tomato plants. We are looking forward to visits from Jack and Jill Pre-School, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and a second visit from Beavers, Phew! We'll need a rest after all that excitement.
The garden is now open every week-end from 12.30 - 5pm and we will be participating in Chinnor Open Gardens on 7th and 8th June. Come along and enjoy this lovely calm space.
As always, if you'd like to volunteer or find out more about the garden, contact us in the usual ways: via our Facebook page, email:

DO YOU ENJOY A SPOT OF LIGHT GARDENING?
The volunteers at the Community Garden in Chinnor, situated on Mill Lane, all enjoy gardening too, for the exercise, the joy of being outdoors, and the knowledge that what we are doing brings pleasure to a lot of other people.
We grow a variety of vegetables and fruit which we share with the community, as well as growing flowers, and this year we will also be offering cut flowers to the community.
There are not many of us now who tend to the garden, and we are asking if anyone is able to offer just a few hours a week, at a time to suit them, alongside one of us?
Whatever your age or ability, there will be something for you to help with.
Please contact Maureen on 07528030151 or drop me a note to 77, Mill Lane, or email me at

NEWS FROM CHINNOR AND PRINCES RISBOROUGH RAILWAY
Did you see Silent Witness on Monday 20th January? It started with passengers on Princes Risborough Platform 4 (CPRRA’s platform at Princes Risborough), and went on to show a body on a railway line, which was all shot on the line in Chinnor at the end of last year, earning CPRRA some welcome extra income.
Have you got your tickets booked for Mothering Sunday – 22nd March? As we go to press there may be a few Cream Tea places still available, but you can still book tickets to travel on any of the trains that day, and even if you can’t get a Cream Tea, the Cambrian Café will be open on Chinnor Station serving it’s usual range of rolls and cakes, and serving both hot and cold drinks.
We currently have a volunteer vacancy for a Group Bookings Organiser. This is an interesting and rewarding position for someone who enjoys contact with the public and the satisfaction of seeing a job through to a conclusion. The person appointed will promote group bookings to new and existing customers, respond to incoming enquiries by phone (mobile supplied), email or letter, arrange dates with clients, invoice and collect payment and ensure the event runs smoothly. This would suit someone who has excellent communication skills, pays attention to detail and is prepared to devote a number of hours during the week - either working from home or elsewhere, to ensure that this important function is successful.
We also have a volunteer vacancy for a Publications Manager. This is an interesting position involving the production and printing of various railway publications. These include the timetable, Santa leaflets and the visitor guidebook. The person appointed will also be responsible for the co-ordination and production of the ‘Watlington Flyer’ magazine in conjunction with the magazine editor, along with the distribution and posting of each edition. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Publisher or equivalent.
These are just two of our current vacancies please see https://www.chinnorrailway.co.uk/article.php/115/situations-vacant for the full list.

NEWS FROM THE CHINNOR VILLAGE CENTRE EVENTS TEAM
The CVC Events team, and a keen supporter of the Centre Collette Bennett, joined forces and held ‘An Evening with Alvin’ (a local Elvis Presley comedy tribute act). The event was held in the Chinnor Village Hall on Friday 4th April. The tickets sold out very quickly and the evening went extremely well and everyone had a fabulous time. The CVC Events team and Collette worked very hard to collect raffle and auction prizes for the event, therefore we would like to sincerely thank all the local businesses and people who supported the event by attending and the generosity of everyone who donated prizes, most of the profits raised were from the raffle and auction so without your donations we wouldn’t have been able to raise so much money for two very worthy charities. The funds raised from the event totalled just over £4,000 and was split between Chinnor Village Centre and Emmett’s Genies, a charity who help bring some magic into the lives of children with critical or life-threatening conditions.
If you have any spare time and would like to get involved with Chinnor Village Centre, please get in touch. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer within the Centre, examples of this are; in the Coffee Shop, with the Friendship Club or dementia cafe, driving the minibus or being an assistant on the minibus for day care attendees, on the board of Trustees, on the Events team, helping with maintenance of the building.
